The FZMBBQ Band (A Musical Tribute to Zappa)
The Frank Zappa Memorial Barbecue Band (FZMBBQ) is the working title for J. Johnson’s 2017 musical project to get Frank Zappa material heard in a live setting in the Boston/Somerville/Cambridge area. The inspiration for the ensemble came as a result of Johnson’s upcoming 60th birthday, as he was urged on by local poet and partner Jennifer Badot to recognize and fulfill his inner need to “throw a party and play a set of Zappa music for all my friends.” He was overheard yelling, “if I’m going over the hill, I am taking it by storm, dammit!” as he began transcribing and arranging a set of Zappa music that draws from some of the earlier jazz-influenced works. Johnson has assembled an all-star band to perform the work (in score order): Brendan Higgins, Russ Gershon, Kathy Olson, Eric Ortiz, Tim Lewandowski, Sara Honeywell, Vessela Stoyanova, Peter Danilchuk, Peter Moore, Mike Leggio, Nate Greenslit, and Johnson himself make up the FZMBBQ Band. Who knows? Surprise guests may get pulled up on stage during the performance, in the spirit of Zappa’s live shows.
Count Zero
Count Zero is an innovative Boston band that combines electronics, acoustic grit, strong melodies, intriguing arrangements and thoughtful lyrics into an intense, eclectic stew of musical experimentation...and it's catchy too. It's Future Pop for the disnenchanted.
