Whistle Jacket
Whistle Jacket is band founder Michael Leyden, Isaiah Idaho, Andrew Leonard, Katherine Growdon and Tony O'Brien.

Leyden began as a singer/songwriter in Cambridge and Philadelphia while training to be a public school teacher. His first foray into the indie rock scene was met with unbridled enthusiasm in The Noise: “Michael’s hook is his voice. An unlikely pleasing combination of a young Neil Young and Gordon Gano (The Violent Femmes). The songs are catchy and poppy. They go bouncing by, making you smile while furrowing your brow with thought.” This precipitated the start of Whistle Jacket with original members bassist Doug Sisko and drummer Chris Hart. Following this line-up were various core configurations involving remarkable musicians, including Rod Moody, Dan Mickus, Matt Jugenheimer, brothers Ben and Adam Simon (The Double Stops), Sarah Smith (Hoonah), Danny Padgett, and Hannah Waxman (The Double Stops).

Currently on lead guitar, Isaiah Idaho’s expansive voice is striking and virtuosic. Bassist Andrew Leonard, a veteran to the Boston music scene keeps it solid with a basis in funk and experimental rock. The dusky vocals of vocalist/keyboardist Growdon make for an interesting contrast to Leyden's aforementioned vocal styling. Growdon, a classically-trained singer, brings a unique nuance and presence to the music. Once a 6th grade student of Leyden and with a rich background in jazz, drummer Tony O’Brien’s incisive technical flair complements the wide range of styles that define Whistle Jacket’s trademark sound.

Whistle Jacket’s latest release Leaves, the band's sixth full-length, was recorded by sound engineer Dan Thorn at Pink Noise Studios (formerly BOCA) in Somerville. Whistle Jacket maintains an active performance schedule in the Boston area, and has toured nationally in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Maine, New Hampshire, and Washington D.C. The band has had the privilege of playing with many outstanding bands/artists including Hands and Knees, The Double Stops, Ra Ra Riot, Anjimilie, BJ Snowden, Pants Yell!, and Brookside Manner.
